HISTORY OF PILATES
The system now popularized as “Pilates” began as a series of exercises designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. With a varied background in athletics, including boxing, acrobatics and martial arts, Pilates became a self-defense instructor for Scotland Yard detectives in England in 1912. Due to his German nationality (though he was of Greek descent) he was interned as an enemy alien during WWI. While there (c. 1918), he developed what he called “Contrology,” primarily for rehabilitation of injury or disease. With limited resources, he used what was available: bed springs and beer keg rings for example, as resistance. The system was eventually fine-tuned, but the fundamentals of core strength and spinal flexibility remained. After he moved to New York, Contrology became a popular form of exercise for dancers. Though the practice of Pilates remained elite for many years, it was Joseph Pilates’ belief that anyone could attain physical fitness - that with commitment to his sytem, health and well being would be greatly increased. His legacy has now been realized, with Pilates as we know it - a widespread and effective form of exercise that is here to stay. |
